Senior Network Engineer

SMHI is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to develop and maintain secure, accessible, and efficient network solutions as part of their vital IT infrastructure. The role involves working with advanced technologies and a complex environment to support SMHI's mission-critical IT operations.
Main requirements:
  • Relevant IT education or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in advanced network environments.
  • Technical knowledge in routing and switching, zoning and traffic flow management, and microsegmentation.
  • Experience with network security including firewall technologies at L4-L7 (e.g., Palo Alto, NSX vDefend).
  • Proficiency in Swedish and English, both spoken and written.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement, and evolve secure, scalable network solutions.
  • Support SMHI's data center and communication infrastructure, both physical and virtualized.
  • Enhance network security architecture and automated network operations.
  • Collaborate closely with IT architects and security experts.
  • Document and visualize network architecture clearly for different audiences.
  • Drive modern working practices within IT infrastructure.
Required hard skills:
  • Routing and switching technologies.
  • Network zoning and traffic flow management.
  • Microsegmentation techniques.
  • Firewall management at L4-L7 layers (e.g., Palo Alto, NSX vDefend).
  • Swedish and English language proficiency.
Recommended hard skills:
  • Network design and implementation in large organizations.
  • Cisco ISE for authentication and policy management.
  • VMware NSX for microsegmentation.
  • VPN technologies including site-to-site and client VPN.
  • QoS, advanced routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, IPv4, IPv6.
  • Lateral threat detection and advanced segmentation and policy management.
  • Programming skills in Python and Ansible for network automation.
  • Experience with GitOps, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and API integrations.
  • Linux environment experience.
  • Public sector experience with high availability and security requirements.
  • Virtualized data centers and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Agile methodologies or DevOps team experience.
