Workplace: Uppsala, Sverige
Expires: September 15, 2025
A postdoctoral position at Uppsala University focused on rigorous foundations for robust and scalable learning within machine learning theory. The project offers significant scientific freedom, with research themes including robust learning under distribution shifts, optimization theory for large-scale models, and Bayesian inference with PAC-Bayes guarantees. The position also involves research, publishing, mentoring, and possibly up to 20% teaching. Collaboration opportunities exist particularly within life sciences, dealing with real-world data challenges such as noise, missing data, temporal variations, and high dimensionality.
Main requirements:
- PhD or equivalent degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related field obtained no more than three years before application deadline (with exceptions for special reasons such as illness or parental leave).
- Good command of English, both spoken and written.
- High degree of self-motivation documented in the application.
- Personal qualities including high creativity, accuracy, and structured problem-solving approach.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in machine learning theory focused on robust and scalable learning.
- Publish research outcomes in scientific journals and conferences.
- Provide supervision and mentoring to students or junior researchers.
- Teach up to 20% of working time (optional).
Required hard skills:
- Expertise in machine learning theory.
- Experience with rigorous foundations for robust learning under distribution shifts.
- Optimization theory for large-scale models.
- Bayesian inference and PAC-Bayes guarantees.
Recommended hard skills:
- Expertise in robust learning.
- Knowledge of Bayesian methods.
- Experience or interest in applications within life sciences.
- Publications in leading machine learning conferences (ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, etc.) are meritorious.
Soft skills:
- Highly motivated and self-driven.
